So what is this product that a lot of people pay up to 10000 (that’s ten thousand) times more than what’s it worth or what it actually costs? (for the record, US measurements are used)
That’s right. Bottled water costs anywhere from 10 cents to $3 a bottle; for the normal “tap-water” kind, and depending on if you buy it in a case at the store or at a corner store or something of that nature. The most expensive water around that I could find is “blingh2o”, which costs over $40 for a 750ml bottle.
What could you buy for $40? A lot of things. I could eat really well for two days. Before getting into that, however, let’s look at the alternative. Tap water. How much does that cost? Depending on where you live and how you get water, if you do, the cost can vary. If you are on city water, the cost is very little. In fact, in California, a gallon of tap water (which is just under 8 500ml bottles), costs about 1/10 of a cent. One-tenth of a penny!
If you buy a bottle in the store in a pack of 30 on sale for $3, the bottles cost you 10 cents each. That’s 100 times as much already. Do this a bunch of times, and you will be out of pocket a pretty penny. If you paid $3 for that bottle, like most of us do (don’t deny it), then you paid 3000 times as much. That’s a 3000% markup! Imagine paying that on food, or a car, or a house! $200,000 seems ok for a house? Try $600,000,000.
Do you see where this is going? You should. In case you don’t, let’s have another comparison. Say you paid $1 for a bottle of water that is 500ml. So, we can pay that you have in effect paid $2 per liter of water, or roughly $7.50 a gallon. How much does a gallon of gas cost? That’s that I said, too.
My bottled water is safer! Sometimes. Usually not however. Unless there is a boil water advisory, or your water is “unsafe”, then tap water is fine for you to be drinking.
To solve the problem of water being unsafe, you can buy a water filter for a few dollars. $50 is pennies compared to what you would spend on bottles. If you really want, you could boil your water, but the problem with that is it pollutes the environment just the same. This brings me to my next point…
That is what is referred to as the pacific garbage patch. Twice the size of Texas, it contains a lot of garbage, and literally tons of plastic. It hurts the environment. Birds and other animals eat it, and bad things happen. Just remember that when you take a sip out of that bottle.
How can we fix this? Simple. Use tap water and put it into reusable bottles, which can normally be bought for around $10 or so. A gallon of water can cost upwards of that price, so I would say it’s a good investment. I personally have a few that I didn’t even pay for.
So the next time you grab a drink from that bottle, keep this in mind.
